Looking back on some of the cars that made sport driving great, and built the legend that has become today’s Porsche , you have to wonder how we ever got to 3,500 pounds, 500 horsepower twin-turbo monsters. The 356 Speedster, for example considered by many to be one of the first modern sports cars-weighed a mere 1,670 pounds and managed just 40 horsepower in some guises.

It appears the Speedster has made a return, although this time around Porsche has used its Boxster as the basis. The new car is called the 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder and it’s set to make its world debut next month at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show before going on sale in February 2010.

Ford is playing a familiar tune with the new Fiesta. The 2011 Ford Fiesta’s secret is the astoundingly good 6-speed PowerShift automatic transmission. Not only does it contribute heavily to the class-leading 40 mpg highway rating, but it’s real workhorse providing a silky-smooth ride. We found that hills and city driving were a non-issue thanks to the lovely affair of the PowerShift transmission mated to the peppy 120 horsepower 1.6-liter DOHC 1-4 engine while the super-ridged chassis and European-tuned suspension handled curves with ease.

This subcompact car comes as a 4-door hatchback or a 4-door sedan. Hatchbacks come in SE and SES trim levels, while sedan offer S, SE, and SEL. S and SE models have standard 15-inch wheels. SEL and SES have 16, and 17s are optional. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags front side airbags, and a driver knee airbag. This new super-mini is slated to arrive in late 2010 and will be offered with both coupe and cabrio bodystyles.

Audi touts the A1 engine lineup as a prime example of its downsizing strategy, which emphasizes forced introduction over larger displacement. The powerplants include two gasoline engines and two diesels, all turbocharged. The petrol-burners include a new 1.2-liter four-cylinder good for 86 hp and 118 lb-ft of torque, as well as a 1.4-liter four that produces 122 hp and 148 lb-ft. The turbo-diesel engines are really just one, a 1.6-liter, but in two strengths: 90 hp/170 lb-ft and 105 hp/184 lb-ft. Diesel models and the 1.2-liter A1 will use a five-speed manual exclusively, but 1.4-liter buyers will get a six-speed stick standard with the option of stepping up to a seven-speed double-clutch S tronic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddles. The A1 is strictly front-drive only.
