The design of the new Bentley Mulsanne is a unique fusion of sportiness, coachbuilt, elegance and solidity. Echoing the Bentley S-Type of the 1950s, the Mulsanne features a bold frontal design dominated by the traditional Bentley matrix grille and highly prominent, classic round inner headlamps with chrome surrounds, flanked by two, smaller outboard lamp clusters, all featuring the latest in lighting technology. The iconic ‘Flying B’ retractable radiator mascot is available as an option.
Whether the Mulsanne truly is the “driver’s choice” in a segment where many owners don’t drive themselves remains to be seen. Certainly, the engine will be key to this, and in true Bentley fashion, it’s the familiar twin-turbocharged 6.75-liter V-8. For use in the Mulsanne, Bentley saw fit to bump output a touch to 506 hp and a whopping 752 lb-ft of torque. The mill mates to a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission. Thus equipped, we imagine that the Mulsanne will indeed deliver “the effortless wave of torque for which Bentley is renowned, “which was the company’s stated goal. The installation of the tried-and-true V-8 also “guaranteed the immense power and unstressed performance that are the hallmark of a flagship Bentley.” With that kind of torque, the Mulsanne probably would be unstressed pulling a 160-car freight train.

This car isn’t kidding. The dramatic new shape speaks of a shift in direction for the XJ nameplate; the driving experience follows up on the promise. It’s true that the previous XJ had an aluminum body and roughly the same chassis architecture, so you could argue this is little more than a reskin and a repowering. But in the first few yards, you realize it represents a comprehensive rethink of what a large Jaguar luxury sedan should be.
There are, however, considerable compensations. If you are a rear-seat passenger aboard this particular version of the XJ with a normally aspirated, 385-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 matched to the long-wheelbase version of the XJ chassis (the executive-length car with a wheelbase that’s 4.9 inches longer that the standard car and an overall length 4.9 inches longer), you will enjoy sumptuous surroundings that should satisfy all but the most self-regarding of monarchs, even if there could be more room for the royal footwear beneath the front chairs and the rear-seats could use a motorized reclining system .

The Kia Optima is currently the flagship sedan for the automaker, and the next model appears to gain considerable consideration in the exterior cosmetics department. The outgoing Optima is a fairly tame sedan, but Kia is replacing its sedan with a much sportier silhouette – much more akin to a coupe, than a sedan. So much so, Kia says the 2011 Optima will be labeled as a 4-door coupe, rather than a sedan.
